Common Conditions We Treat
Pelvis & Hip Conditions
- Gluteal Tendinopathy / Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS): A very common cause of pain on the outer side of the hip, often involving irritation of the gluteal tendons where they attach to the hip bone.
- Hip Bursitis (Trochanteric Bursitis): Inflammation of the bursa, a small fluid-filled sac that sits over the point of the hip. This often occurs in conjunction with gluteal tendinopathy.
- Hip Osteoarthritis (OA): A degenerative condition of the hip joint’s cartilage, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.
- Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI): A condition where extra bone growth causes abnormal contact between the ball and socket of the hip joint, leading to pain and restricted movement.
- Hip Labral Tears: Damage to the ring of cartilage (labrum) that lines the rim of the hip socket, often causing a clicking, locking, or sharp catching pain.
- Sacroiliac Joint (SIJ) Dysfunction & Pain: Pain and inflammation in the joint that connects your sacrum (the base of your spine) to your pelvis.
- Piriformis Syndrome: A condition where the piriformis muscle, located deep in the buttock, spasms and causes irritation of the nearby sciatic nerve.
- Athletic Groin Pain (including Osteitis Pubis & Sports Hernia): A range of complex injuries causing chronic pain in the groin and lower abdominal region, common in athletes who perform a lot of kicking and twisting movements.
- Hip Flexor Strain & Tendinopathy: Injury or irritation to the group of muscles at the front of your hip, often from overuse or a sudden movement.
- Pelvic Girdle Pain (including Pregnancy-Related): Pain experienced at the front or back of the pelvis, common during and after pregnancy due to hormonal changes and increased load.
- Post-Surgical Rehabilitation: Personalised recovery programs following procedures such as hip replacements (THR), hip arthroscopy, or fracture repairs (ORIF).
Thigh Conditions
- Hamstring Strains, Tears & Tendinopathy: Injury to the large muscles at the back of the thigh or their attaching tendons, often occurring during sprinting or sudden stretching.
- Quadriceps Strains & Contusions (Cork Thigh): Damage to the muscles at the front of the thigh, either from a strain (tear) or a direct impact (cork).
- Adductor Strains (Groin Strain): Tearing or overstretching of the muscles on the inside of the thigh.
- Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome: A common overuse injury causing pain on the outer side of the knee, resulting from friction of the long band of tissue that runs down the outer thigh.
- Meralgia Paresthetica: A condition causing numbness, tingling, or burning pain on the skin of the outer thigh due to compression of a sensory nerve.
- Referred Pain: Pain felt in the hip or thigh that actually originates from another area, most commonly the lower back (lumbar spine).
Peninsula Physio & Rehab
Our Approach to Treatment
A successful outcome for hip and thigh pain depends on identifying and addressing contributing factors. Your recovery journey at Peninsula Physio and Rehab starts with a detailed biomechanical assessment to understand not just what hurts, but why.
Your personalised treatment plan will be active, evidence-based, and focused on your goals.
Comprehensive Biomechanical Assessment
We analyse your movement patterns, including walking and running gait, to identify any contributing factors from your feet, knees, or lower back. This holistic view is critical for effective treatment.
Personalised Exercise Prescription
This is the core of your recovery. We will guide you through a tailored program to strengthen key muscles (like the glutes and core), improve hip mobility and flexibility, and retrain functional movement patterns relevant to your life and sport.
Hands-On Manual Therapy
Our physiotherapists use skilled manual techniques, including soft tissue massage, joint mobilisations, and trigger point therapy, to help reduce pain, alleviate muscle tension, and restore your range of motion.
Load Management & Activity Modification
We provide advice on how to safely modify your training, work, or daily activities. This allows the injured tissue to heal while you maintain as much fitness and function as possible.
Gait & Running Retraining
For runners and athletes, we can provide specific feedback and drills to improve your running technique, helping to reduce load on injured structures and minimise the risk of re-injury.
Education and Self-Management Strategies
We empower you with a clear understanding of your condition and provide you with the tools and knowledge you need to manage your symptoms, track your progress, and prevent future problems.
