An injured knee ligament may affect more than just your knee. It may influence how you move, your confidence with everyday activities, and your ability to stay active.
As Frankston Physiotherapists, we offer tailored knee pain treatment and post-operative rehabilitation to help you build strength, regain function, and return to the activities that matter to you, at a pace that suits your body.
Types of Knee Ligament Injuries
There are several different types of knee ligament injuries, ranging from mild sprains to more significant tears. Below, we outline the most commonly injured knee ligaments and how they occur.
Anterior Cruciate Ligament
The ACL is located in the interior of the knee joint, connecting the thigh and shin bones diagonally.
Sprains and tears to this ligament usually occur after a sudden change in direction or an impact. For instance, twisting in place too quickly, landing from a jump awkwardly or falling. These injuries are very common in athletes, but they can happen to anyone.
Posterior Cruciate Ligament
PCL injuries may be harder to identify as they often occur in conjunction with other injuries, such as cartilage injuries or bone bruises.
These ligaments are located in the back of the knee joint and are crucial for maintaining stability. Sprains and tears usually occur after a direct impact to the knee, whether from falling or an accident.
Medial Collateral Ligament
The MCL stretches across the thighbone to the top of the shin bone along the inner part of the knee.
Sprains and tears of this ligament usually occur when pressure is placed on the outside of the knee.
Lateral Collateral Ligament
The LCL is located on the outside of the knee joint. It connects your lower leg to your thighbone.
Tears and sprains of the LCL usually occur after a sudden impact or frequent stop-and-start movements.
Common Symptoms of Knee Ligament Injuries
Your symptoms may vary depending on the type of ligament injury you have sustained. However, there are also several overlapping symptoms you may look out for, such as:
- A popping sound or sensation at the time of injury
- Pain around or within the knee
- Swelling and tenderness
- Stiffness or reduced range of movement
- A feeling of instability or difficulty bearing your weight

Common Knee Ligament Injury Questions, Answered
Can I treat a knee ligament injury at home?
There are some simple measures that may be used at home to help manage symptoms in the early stages of a knee ligament injury, such as the RICE method and pain medication.
RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. This approach is commonly used to help manage pain and swelling. It generally involves reducing weight-bearing on the leg and applying ice to the affected area, wrapped in a cloth, for short periods.
Next, use a compression bandage for support, and elevate the leg when possible.
While these measures may help reduce discomfort in the short term, they may not address the underlying cause of the injury. A thorough assessment and guided rehabilitation plan may be important to support a full recovery.
What locations do you cover?
While we proudly provide care for anyone across the greater Melbourne and Mornington Peninsula areas, our care primarily covers patients from the local areas of Baxter, Bonbeach, Botanic Ridge, Carrum Downs, Chelsea, Clyde North, Cranbourne, Edithvale, Hastings, Langwarrin, Lyndhurst, Mornington, Mount Eliza, Mount Martha, Patterson Lakes, Pearcedale, Sandhurst, Seaford, Skye, Somerville
When should I seek professional help?
If you are experiencing significant pain that does not settle after a day or two, or if you are having difficulty putting weight on your leg, it may be worth seeking a professional assessment.
Ongoing swelling, a feeling of instability, or reduced movement in the knee may also be signs that further guidance is needed.
Do ligament tears require surgery?
Not necessarily. Some ligament tears may recover well with the right rehabilitation and support. In other cases, further investigation may be helpful.
Your physiotherapist may recommend imaging to help determine the severity of the injury and guide the most appropriate management approach.
How long does it take to recover from a knee ligament injury?
Recovery time may vary depending on which ligament is involved, the severity of the injury, and the type of management required. Some people may recover within weeks, while more significant injuries may take longer and require a structured rehabilitation program.
What happens if my knee ligament injury is left untreated?
If left untreated, a knee ligament injury may place extra strain on the knee and increase the risk of further injury or longer-term movement difficulties.
